Super Bowl XLV Pick

Here is my pick for Super Bowl XLV (home team in CAPS):

GREEN BAY over Pittsburgh (24-21)

Last Week: 2-0
Overall: 147-88

Pre-Super Bowl Stats of the Week

Stat of the week No. 1: On Sunday, Dallas becomes the fifth metropolitan area to host a World Series and a Super Bowl in the same “season” (Tampa – 2008, Atlanta – 1999, Minneapolis – 1991, Los Angeles – 1966).

Stat of the week No. 2: Five of the past six teams to reach the Super Bowl -- Green Bay this year, New Orleans and Indianapolis last year, Pittsburgh and Arizona the year before – did not have a 1,000 rusher.

Stat of the week No. 3: The Packers’ and Steelers’ offenses have allowed a combined 95 sacks, about the same amount as allowed by New Orleans, New England, Indianapolis and Atlanta combined.

Stat of the week No. 4: Green Bay’s six regular-season losses were by a combined 20 points.

Stat of the week No. 5: Since the start of the 2009 season, the Steelers are 16-4 when Troy Polamalu plays and 6-8 when he doesn’t.

Bonus stat of the week: 5,082 members of the media were accredited to cover Super Bowl XLV and related events, which is the most in SB history.

Conference Championship Round Stats of the Week

Stat of the week No. 1: The 16-team NFC has produced 10 different champions over the last 10 seasons. Of the six teams that have not won a conference championship, five have won at least one playoff game (only Detroit has not won a playoff game in the last 10 years).

Stat of the week No. 2: LaMarr Woodley recorded his 10th career sack in his sixth career playoff, which is the fastest any player has reached 10 career sacks in the postseason.

Stat of the week No. 3: Ben Roethlisberger has won all three postseason games that rank as his worst, in terms of QB rating.

Stat of the week No. 4: Sam Shields became the first rookie and fifth player overall to register a sack and two interceptions in a playoff game.
Stat of the week No. 5: The Packers 21-14 win over the Bears was the first NFC championship game since 1978 that did not have a field goal made in the game.
