Week Before the Super Bowl Stats of the Week

Stat of the Week no. 1: The Super Bowl has been a rematch of a regular-season game 12 times.  The loser of the first game has won the sequel seven times.

Stat of the Week no. 2: The Patriots have allowed an NFL-worst 89 plays of 20-yards or more.  In addition, they have allowed 17 pass plays of 30-yards or more, which is also an NFL-worst.

Stat of the Week no. 3: The Patriots and Giants feature defenses that are statistically the worst defenses in Super Bowl history (in terms of yard per game allowed).  The Pats cover their porous defense with the second-best offense in Super Bowl history (only the 1984 Miami Dolphins averaged more yards per game).

Stat of the Week no. 4: Super Bowl XLVI (46) is the first one in which both starting quarterbacks have won the SB MVP award (Brady - 2, Manning - 1).

Stat of the Week no. 5: Since 2000, teams seeded fourth or lower in the playoffs have made it to the Super Bowl six times, matching the total from the previous 25 years.

Conference Championship Stats of the Week

Stat of the Week no. 1: The Giants-Patriots' match-up will be the fifth Super Bowl rematch in history (Buf-Dal, Cin-SF, Pit-Dal & Mia-Was).  It will also be the third quarterback rematch in NFL history (Aikman-Kelly & Bradshaw-Staubach).

Stat of the Week no. 2: Tom Brady & Bill Belichick are the first quarterback-coach combination to win five conference championship games in the Super Bowl era.

Stat of the Week no. 3: John Harbaugh is the first coach in NFL history to win playoff games in each of his first four coaching seasons.

Stat of the Week no. 4: Eli Manning has won an NFL record five road playoff games and Tom Coughlin has won seven road playoff games, which is tied with Tom Landry for the most in history.

Stat of the Week no. 5: The Giants are the first team in NFL history to make the Super Bowl with a negative point differential during the regular season.

Divisional Round Stats of the Week

Stat of the Week no. 1: Tom Brady tied an NFL record with six touchdown passes and established a new Patriots' postseason record with 368 yards passing.

Stat of the Week no. 2: Arian Foster is the first undrafted player in NFL history to rush for 100 yards in each of his first two career playoff games.  He also became the first player to ever rush for more than 100 yards against the Ravens in a postseason game (previous high was Eddie George's 91 yards rushing in 2000).

Stat of the Week no. 3: Ed Reed is now the fifth player in NFL history with at least eight career playoff interceptions (9 - Ronnie Lott, Bill Simpson, Charlie Waters; 8 - Lester Hayes).

Stat of the Week no. 4: The Giants' 17-point win was the largest margin of victory ever posted by a road team to eliminate a defending Super Bowl champ.  In other news, the Packers became the first team in NFL history to lose their first playoff game after winning 15 or more games in the regular season.

Stat of the Week no. 5: In their last two playoff losses, the Saints have averaged 34 points per game and Drew Brees has averaged 61.5 attempts.

Bonus Stat of the Week: Hakeem Nicks is the third player in NFL history with two 65+ yard touchdown catches in the same postseason (Tim Brown, Isaac Bruce).

Bonus Stat of the Week: The Carolina Panthers scored 210 more points (406) in 2011 than they did in 2010 (196).  Cam Newton accounted for exactly 210 points (21 passing touchdowns & 14 rushing touchdowns).

Wild Card Stats of the Week

Stat of the Week no. 1: This is the third year under the current playoff format (revised in 1990) that all four home teams advanced to the Divisional Playoffs.

Stat of the Week no. 2: Calvin Johnson & Demaryius Thomas posted just the sixth and seventh 200-yard receiving game in NFL playoff history.

Stat of the Week no. 3: There has been at least one OT playoff game in 10 of the past 12 postseasons.

Stat of the Week no. 4: The New York Giants made their 31st playoff appearance, which is the most by any team in NFL history.  Their match-up with Atlanta featured the first 7-2 halftime score in NFL history.

Stat of the Week no. 5: Drew Brees and Matthew Stafford combined for 846 yards passing, which is an NFL playoff record.

Bonus Stat of the Week: For the first time in NFL history, the Divisional Playoffs feature four Super Bowl MVP quarterbacks (Brady, Brees, Manning & Rodgers).

Week 17 Stats of the Week

Stat of the Week No. 1: Eli Manning set an NFL record with 15 fourth quarter touchdown passes.  He also established an NFL record for most touchdown passes with less than four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter with eight.

Stat of the Week No. 2: Drew Brees set NFL single season records for passing yards (5,476), completions (468), completion % (71.2%), 300-yard games (13) and consecutive 300-yard games (7).

Stat of the Week No. 3: The Green Bay-Detroit game was the first one in NFL history that had both quarterbacks throw for at least 400 yards and five touchdowns.  The teams combined for 971 net passing yards, which is the most in NFL history.

Stat of the Week No. 4: There were 125 games decided by seven points or less, which is the second highest total for a single season in NFL history (126 games in 2002).

Stat of the Week No. 5: Victor Cruz became the 26th player and the 3rd undrafted free agent in NFL history to post a 1500-yard receiving season.  The other two free agents were Wes Welker & Rod Smith.

Bonus Stat of the Week No. 1: The 2011 season featured an NFL-record 11,356 points and the 44.36 points per game was the most since 1965.

Bonus Stat of the Week No. 2: Ray Rice joined Marshall Faulk as the only players in NFL history with more than one season with at least 1,000 yards rushing and 700 yards receiving.

Bonus Stat of the Week No. 3: The 49ers finished the regular season with 10 turnovers, which tied the 2010 Patriots for the fewest in a single season.

Bonus Stat of the Week No. 4: Doug Baldwin became the first undrafted rookie free agent to lead his team in receptions and yards receiving  since Bill Groman did it for the Houston Oilers in 1960.
